ENJOY AN ANTIQUES WEEKEND AT OGLEBAY
WHEELING, W.Va. (March 14, 2008)- - Featuring a wide assortment of nostalgic pieces ranging from furniture, linens and household collectibles to fine jewelry, artwork and ceramics, Oglebay Institute’s 54th Annual Antiques Show and Sale is the place to find unique collector items to decorate your home or give as gifts.
Held April 4, 5 and 6 and covering two floors of Wilson Lodge in Oglebay Resort, the show features more than 50 dealers from 10 states.
“This show brings together a broad array of top-notch collectors and experts with a full inventory of merchandise. These specialists are available to answer questions ranging from conserving works of art to restoring antique furniture, fabric and more,” Museums Director Christin Stein said. “Advanced collectors and beginning buyers can shop with confidence knowing there are no fakes, no junk and no mysteries.”
Antiques dealer and show professional Peter Chillingworth of Scenery Hill, Pa., has managed the show since 2000, but has been involved with the show since 1963 when he set up shop as a dealer.
He said the Oglebay Institute show is “the best in the Midwest” and likens it to an antiques trip through a charming New England village, full of curiosity shops.
In addition to a wonderful shopping opportunity, the Antiques Show and Sale is a social event to attend with family and friends. Friday evening preview events are the perfect opportunity to chat, drink, dine, shop, enjoy and get a special “sneak peak” of the show.
Preview events include a cocktail party at the glittering Glass Museum, an elegant dinner in the historic Mansion Museum and a scrumptious dessert party at nearby Wilson Lodge.
“The Show tingles your shopping taste buds, and the preview events satisfy your appetite for delicious cuisine,” Stein said.
The menu for the cocktail party includes marinated shrimp, grilled pork tenderloin, asparagus rollups, endive with curried chicken salad, hot artichoke dip, fruit kabobs and more. Served with wine, dinner selections include roasted beef tenderloin, poached salmon and a variety of salads. An enticing array of sweets and coffees, plus a cash bar are available at the dessert party.
Three admission options are available for the preview events. Tickets can be purchased to include cocktails, dinner and dessert; cocktails and dessert only or just dessert. Those purchasing tickets for the dinner and the cocktail party will enjoy limousine service to and from Wilson Lodge for the exclusive preview shopping opportunity. Reservations are required for those events, but are not required for the dessert preview party. All patron events include repeat admission to the show all weekend long.
A fundraiser of the Museums of Oglebay Institute, this weekend show is put together by the hard-working Committee of the Museums of Oglebay Institute, and money raised supports a worthwhile cause- preserving and interpreting our local heritage.
The show is co-chaired by Wheeling residents Paula McClure and Charlotte Karges.
Other events that add to the excitement of the weekend include: a guided antiques show tour with expert appraiser Barbara “Bobbie” Michael; dealer booth talks where dealers discuss their specialty; two educational programs- one on “living green” through antiques collecting and another on decorating with antiques in a modern world; and prize drawings for “Old Money” to be used toward show purchases.
Patron preview events take place Friday, April 4. General show hours are 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Saturday, April 5 and 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday, April 6 at Wilson Lodge. All events are open to the public, and general show admission is just $7.
