SUMMER HISTORY DAYS AND “FASHION FRIDAYS” OFFERED AT THE MUSEUMS OF OGLEBAY INSTITUTE

WHEELING, W.Va. (June 2, 2009)— The Museums of Oglebay Institute are once again planning Summer History Days June 29 - July 2. The fun takes place at the Mansion and Glass Museums, operated by Oglebay Institute and located in Oglebay Park. The Mansion Museum also has a new family program titled “Fashion Fridays,” which takes place at 9a.m. every Friday and complements the Victorian fashion exhibit currently on display.

The hour-long “Fashion Fridays” program includes an exclusive guided tour of the fashion exhibit and a special opportunity to view artifacts from storage not on display to the general public. Children can try on Victorian clothing from a “dress up trunk” and receive a group photo to commemorate their visit. Children attending “Fashion Fridays” must be accompanied by an adult.

Led by Oglebay Institute museum professionals, Summer History Days are the perfect place to play and learn. Ages 6 through 12 will enjoy the interactive programs and the chance to explore the historic properties.

Summer History Days run from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Enrollment is flexible, and children can participate in one, two, three or all four days.

For children with an interest in history, arts, games, and more, staff members will guide interactive programming focusing on the Museums’ collections and exhibits in the morning, including a themed craft or activity, followed by a bag lunch and swimming at the Oglebay Park outdoor pool. The camp is perfect for children visiting Wheeling for summer vacation and for local residents.

Monday, June 29: All About Glass includes glass working demonstrations and interactive tours of the Glass Museum are part of the day.

Tuesday, June 30: Victorian Fashion & Fancy includes a tour of the exhibit “Dressing Wheeling From the Inside Out” and the opportunity to learn about and try on period clothing.

Wednesday, July 1: Archaeology challenges children to “dig” into the past and “piece together” history.

Thursday, July 2: A Child’s Day explores how children entertained themselves before T.V., ipods and Wii.

Using their imaginations, children will travel back in time and get a better understanding of the past as they learn to truly enjoy history and heritage.

To register for the Summer History Days or “Fashion Fridays,” or for more information, please call the Museums of Oglebay Institute at 304.242.7272. Registration must be made at least one day prior to each program.
