What is Paint Oglebay: Plein Air?

Liz NeumannEncompassing a variety of media, from oils to watercolors and pastels, painting en plein air (a French term meaning “in the open air”) originated in 19th-century Europe and has roots in both Realism and Impressionism. It's a familiar concept today, but in the late 1800s when artists ventured out of their studios into nature to investigate and capture the effects of sunlight and different times of days on a subject, it was quite revolutionary.

Plein air painters absorb everything around them from sights and sounds to weather and light changes so their works reflect the mood, vitality and colors of the landscape that only the human eye can see.

The concept of gathering groups of artists together to paint outdoors in a central location is a fairly recent phenomenon that is gaining international popularity.

2011 marks the 6th Annual Paint Oglebay: Plein Air weekend and offers artists and art patrons a unique series of art experiences outdoors. Painters from Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania will gather at the world-class Oglebay Resort in Wheeling to capture on canvas the natural beauty of West Virginia, while visitors observe them in the process. Public events include art demonstrations and workshops, nature walks, food, music and exhibits. The weekend offers an opportunity for artists to share inspiration, experience and encouragement and for the public to interact with artists, see paintings in various stages of completion and gain a deeper understanding of art.
