Artists’ Workshops:
Plein Air Painting with Ron Donoughe, founder of Plein Air Painters of Western Pennsylvania. (bio)
“I do not seek postcard scenes; I seek an intensity of feeling that comes only from being in a particular place at a particular time.” – Ron Donoughe, artist statement
Best known for his spirited landscape paintings of Western Pennsylvania, Ron will help students see and translate the natural world into paintings. Principles of light, color and value will be addressed, and he will demonstrate how premixed colors can help the outdoor painter achieve harmony and speed the process. Composition will be discussed as paintings develop, and participants will explore how brushwork makes a painting more interesting to the viewer.
“Paint ‘The Magic’” Workshop with L.W. “Bill” Rettig, Jr. (bio)
“Bill gives the kind of individual attention that you dream about but never experience. He spends the time and energy to know exactly what it is that the participant needs to learn.”- Rettig student
Bill will demonstrate his outdoor painting techniques and design concepts using the watercolor medium. The workshop will offer students an in-depth look into the artist’s thought process and the technical applications needed to become proficient in plein air painting. The aim of the workshop is to teach you to think, see and express light and form that captures the moment. Basic to advanced mentoring.
Plein Air Basics with Ruth Ann Sturgill, vice president of the Ohio Plein Air Society" (bio)
"Painting en plein air is the ultimate artist experience. There is such an amazing, almost spiritual, connection between subject and artist. . .” - Ruth Ann Sturgill, artist statement
This workshop will cover the basics for those that are fairly new or completely new to plein air. Students should have some oil or acrylic painting experience, however. Instruction will focus on a simple, primary palette, using only three colors plus white and stressing the use of only four values, as they relate to the plane they are describing. The morning session includes a demonstration and discussion. In the afternoon, students will choose a spot to paint and will receive individual instruction and assistance as they go.
