GEMS
Oglebay Institute's support to Education Means Success (GEMS) Program assists in bringing financial underwriting to schools and organizations that would like to participate in Oglebay Institute programming but lack sufficient resources.

Through the GEMS concept, Oglebay Institute provides these schools and organizations with the tools and guidance to fundraise. Funds they raise through the GEMS program are available for use in any of Oglebay Institute’s five disciplines: Environmental Education, Dance, Museums, Performing Arts & Visual Arts. The funding can be used for programs that are offered on-site or in a field trip setting.

Through the generosity of area businesses, the schools that raise the most funding receive a further financial reward in the form of grants from generous local sponsors that is added to the schools GEMS total.

At the end of the fundraising drive, Oglebay Institute sponsors an event called the Hike for GEMS at Oglebay Institute’s Schrader Center in Oglebay. Held in conjunction with Appalachian Heritage Festival, the hike includes hands-on activities showcasing the many programs of Oglebay Institute and concludes with a rewards ceremony. All area students, parents and teachers as well as the public are invited to attend this free event.

Currently over 30 schools participate in the GEMS program and through GEMS Oglebay Institute programming benefits hundreds of students with exciting hands-on educational experiences.

The GEMS concept is an innovative way for schools to use Oglebay Institute programs to supplement students' education through the generosity of area businesses and individuals. Oglebay Institute is inviting new schools to take part in the GEMS program.
