Unit: Surrealism Project: Collage Featured Artist: Salvador Dalí, René Magritte Objectives:
1. Identify the use of different materials in collages.
2. Use diverse media resources to create and assemble images into an imaginary object.
3. Recognize and describe the different styles of collage by both Magritte and Dalí. Materials Provided:
• Paper, 9”x12”
• Glue
• Scissors
• Magazines Materials Needed:
• Colored pencils or crayons (optional) Vocabulary:
1. Cubism: characterized in painting by objects that are broken up, analyzed, and re-assembled in an abstracted form; the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints.
2. Proportion: the study of relation of human body, or in general, animal body, parts to each other and the whole. Motivation:
1. Show and discuss examples from both Dalí and Magritte that involve collage.
2. Demonstrate all steps of the collage procedure before students begin.
3. Show students the finished collage illustrating the multiple pieces used to create the new object. Instruction: 1. Look through several magazines for animal body parts, human body parts and any accessories that you may want to add to your collage such as sunglasses, hats or shoes
(the more colorful the object the better). Choose these parts to make the goofiest combination of an animal, human or machine that will look like it is joined together as one.
2. Roughly cut out around the objects you might consider using in your collage. Also look through the magazine for a whole page that is covered with color and contains a small amount of words to give your collage a background. Tear out the whole page and glue it to the 9”x12” piece of paper.
3. Pick the pieces of body parts and objects that make the silliest combination for the new body. Trim the objects to remove any unwanted background or color. Arrange the different pieces together on the background before gluing any pieces down incase you find any other pieces that may make a sillier fit for the body. 4. Begin gluing down the different body parts starting at the bottom with the feet or shoes and working to the top with the head, hair or crazy hat.
5. You may also choose the option to create your own background on paper. This will give you the chance to add your own features or special effects such as fire, or draw in
whatever goes best with your collage cutouts.
Evaluation:
1. Use multiple images containing various shapes and colors to create a design or image?
2. Use correct techniques to produce a clean image?
3. Evaluate completed work?
