Project: Mother and Baby Perspective

Featured Artist: Raphael

Objectives:
1. Identify different kinds of Renaissance paintings.
2. Create a Renaissance mother and child drawing.
3. Recognize composition in works of artists and students.
4. Evaluate the use of composition and technique in artist and student work.

Materials Provided:
• Circle pattern
• Colored pencils and sharpeners
• White 9x12” paper
• Glue sticks
• Black 9x12” paper
• Scissors

Materials Needed:

• Pencils

Vocabulary:
1. Renaissance: a cultural movement that encompassed a revival of learning based on classical sources, the development of linear perspective in painting, and gradual but widespread educational reform.
2. Raphael: an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, celebrated for the perfection and grace of his paintings and drawings.
3. Composition: the placement or arrangement of visual elements in a work of art.

Motivation:
1. Show and discuss examples of Renaissance art.
2. Demonstrate all steps of procedure before students begin.
3. Show students the finished project.

Instruction:
1. Use a pencil to trace the circle pattern in the middle of the white sheet of paper.







2. Draw a mother and child inside of the traced circle.







3. Color the entire picture with colored pencils.


4.
Cut along the outside edge of the circle with the drawing inside.




5. Glue the back of the circle making sure to cover all the edges so the paper won’t curl up.







6. Place the cut out image in the center of a piece of black construction paper.







Evaluation:

1. Use color and design to create an image in the circle?
2. Use correct cutting and coloring techniques to produce clean borders and crisp-edged lines?
3. Evaluate completed work?
