Vocabulary:
1. Hieroglyphics: a formal writing system used by the ancient Egyptians that contained a combination of logographic and alphabetic elements. 2. Cartouche: is an oblong enclosure with a horizontal line at one end, indicating that the text enclosed is a royal name 3. Skewer stick (pointed clay tool) 4. Score: method used to join two pieces of pottery by scratching each side that is to be joined. 5. Coil: method to form the clay in a long round shape like a snake (roll in between hands or on the table).
Motivation:
1. Show and discuss the hieroglyphics poster. 2. Demonstrate all steps of procedure before students begin. 3. Show students the finished product.
Instruction: 1. Introduce hieroglyphics poster. 2. Identify the letters that are needed that make up your name. 3. Pass out one piece of clay to each student. Cut or tear each piece in half (each student should now have two pieces).
4. Using a dowel rod roll out one piece of clay flat and long ways so that instead of a circle a long strip is formed. Make sure the clay is still thick but long enough to fit your name.
5.Write out your name in hieroglyphics with the skewer stick and score hieroglyphics on the clay cartouche just formed to make sure the cartouche is long enough to fit the whole word.
6. Using your hands, roll extra clay into a coil (long snake) that is small enough to shape into hieroglyphics. Form each letter using the coiled clay.
7. Place the newly formed letters over top of the same letters that have been scored into the clay cartouche. The new letters should be raised on top of the cartouche and not flat against the surface. You can also use the clay tools to add design to your cartouche once your name is finished.
Evaluation:
1. Use tools correctly and correct techniques to roll a coil? 2. Use correct technique working with skewer sticks to score? 3. Evaluate completed work?
