Objectives:
1. Identify pyramids in framed prints. 2. Use line to create pyramid decoration. 3. Recognize hieroglyphics in ancient pyramids and work of students.
Vocabulary:
1. Pyramid: three-dimensional polyhedron where the faces other than the base are triangular and converge on one point, called the apex. 2. Hieroglyphics: formal writing system used by the ancient Egyptians that contained a combination of logographic and alphabetic elements.
Motivation:
1. Show and discuss examples of prints of pyramids in prehistoric time period. 2. Demonstrate all steps of coloring and building procedure before students begin. 3. Show students that the finished project.
Instruction: 1. Introduce the Hieroglyphics poster. 2. Carefully remove the pyramid shape from the perforated paper (give a small tug around the perimeter of object to separate the pyramid).
3. Lay out the pyramid flat in front of you. Fold the paper to create three separate triangles. To formulate the appearance of bricks or blocks on the outside of the pyramid use a ruler and a pencil to make straight lines across each of the triangles starting with the middle triangle. You will not be able to make the same marks across the entire pattern because the other two wings will be folded back.
4. Fold back the other two sides of the triangle and create the same lines on the blank sides. To finish the bricks, draw short vertical 1/2”-1”spaced lines from one row to the next across each row. Below that first row draw the same vertical lines starting inbetween the blocks on the first row. Repeat the lines down the pyramid alternating lines every other line.
5. Turn the pyramid over and decorate the other side. Try using the hieroglyphics from the poster or other objects or symbols that resemble the Egyptian time period.
6. Fold the small tabs along the fold lines and insert into the two slits on the other end of the pyramid so it will create the closed 3-D pyramid.
Evaluation:
1. Use line to create a design on the pyramid? 2. Use correct folding techniques to produce crisp-edged lines? 3. Evaluate completed work?
