Objectives:
1. Identify different kinds of still-life paintings. 2. Use color to create a still-life painting. 3. Recognize use of color in CÈzanne’s paintings. 4. Evaluate the technique in artist and student work.
Vocabulary:
1. Still life: is a work of art depicting inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural or man-made in an artificial setting. 2. Impressionism: 19th century art movement with characteristics that include visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on light in its changing qualities.
Motivation:
1. Show and discuss examples of Still-life paintings by Cezanne.
2. Demonstrate all steps of procedure before students begin. 3. Show students the finished product.
Instruction: 1. Choose a patterned worksheet to create your still life.
2. Use several different colors of tissue paper to fill in the blank pattern. Try using darker colors to outline and to appear as shadows. Use lighter colors to make highlights (Try to keep highlights on the same side of each object to create the illusion of a light source). 3. Cut or tear the tissue paper to fill in the blank spaces. Use the dark colors first on the object then fill in using the lighter colors (Do not use black for a shadow, experiment with light and dark colors for highlights and shadows).
4. Once the worksheet is complete fill in the background using tissue paper, crayons or markers to create a setting for the still life. You may also add detail to the picture with a marker or crayon once all the tissue paper is in place.
Evaluation:
1. Use blank worksheet and tissue paper to create still life? 2. Use correct techniques for cutting/gluing of tissue paper? 3. Evaluate completed work?
