Objectives:
1. Learn how to use a grid to enlarge a picture.
2. Create a picture that mimics the style of Lichtenstein.
3. Learn how to accurately render a picture.
Materials Provided:
• Paper, 9”x9” and 9”x12”
• Comic strips to work from
• Colored pencils
Materials Needed:
• Pencils
• Rulers if needed
Vocabulary:
1. Grid: the laying out of a page using a grid of different-sized and -shaped rectangles.
2. Enlarge: to increase something in size.
3. Ben Day (benday): Dots, used to add tone in printing.
Motivation:
1. Show and discuss examples of prints from Roy Lichtenstein that use comic strips as subject matter.
2. Explain that Lichtenstein produced paintings whose styles featured heavy outlines; Benday dots that were used to add tone in printing, and his imagery were drawn from cartoons and advertisements.
Instruction: 1. Pass out the comic strips to the students and explain to them that they will be drawing the comic strip that they choose. 2. Once they have decided on an image have them look to see if it is square in shape or rectangle in shape. Then pass out the white drawing paper to match the shape of the
comic strip. 3. Have them fold the drawing paper in half in one direction and then fold it in half in the other direction. Have the students do the same thing to the comic strip
paper.
4. Unfold both papers and smooth until it is flat. This will divide your papers into four equal parts creating a grid that will help students enlarge their drawing. If they want they can draw a line down the fold lines to make them stand out and become easier for them to see.
5. Have them start in the upper left hand corner with a pencil and start to render what they see in the comic strip. To make them focus on that section and make it easier for them to see what they are to draw fold the comic strip so that only that section is visible.
6. To get the size and the proportion correct have the student make a little dash in the middle of all four side in that section on their drawing paper and on their comic strip. Have them do that for all four sections.
7. Once one
section is
finished have them move to the upper right
hand corner and repeat steps 5 and 6. Then
move to the bottom and have them finish the
rest of the drawing. Make sure that when
they move to a new section that they match
up with the drawing from the othe
section.
8. Use colored pencils and try to match the colors as close as possible.
Evaluation:
1. Used the grid method successfully?
2. Able to describe Roy Lichtenstein’s style?
3. Made the comic strip enlarged on another sheet of paper?
