Project: Checkerboard

Objectives: 1. Identify different kinds of lines in Op art prints. 2. Use line to create checkerboard image. 3. Recognize line and pattern in prints of artists and students. 4. Evaluate the use of line in student work.
Materials Provided:
• Paper, 9x12”
• Markers
Materials Needed:
• Newspaper to cover the table
Vocabulary: 1. Pattern: theme of reoccurring events or objects sometimes referred to as elements of a set. 2. Optical illusion: characterized by visually perceived images that differ from objective reality.
Motivation:
1. Show and discuss examples of op art prints that use line and shape to create a pattern. 2. Demonstrate all steps of procedure before students begin to draw. 3. Show students that the finished project.
Instruction: 1. Draw a small dot in the center of the 9”x12” paper.
2. Draw an even amount of wavy, curvy lines that start from the center dot and extend to the edge of the paper (try 810 lines for best results). Make sure to spread out and space lines evenly so that the lines are not crossing or touching anywhere expect the middle dot.
3. Draw a circle (can be wavy or zigzag) around the wavy lines about 1⁄2 to 1 inch away from the center dot. Draw a second circle around the first circle about the same distance from the first circle to the center. Continue drawing circles until you reach the edge of the page as each circle gets larger towards the edge of the page.
4. Begin coloring in every other section within the smallest circle; the circle crossing the lines has created each section. Make sure to leave every other section blank to begin the start of your pattern.
5. Color the sections in the bigger circle opposite of the sections colored in the smaller circle. Only the corner of the colored sections should be touching, colored sections should not be right on top of another color section. A pattern will start to emerge.
6. Continue coloring every other section in each of the circles with the same opposite pattern until all circles and sections are complete. No color should be toucing exept for the corners when the pattern is complete.
