Objectives:
1. Identify different elements of castle design.
2. Use shapes and color to create a 3-D castle.
3. Evaluate the method of cutting, folding and design.

Materials Provided:
• Castle pattern
• Green & Blue construction paper
• Scissors
• Staples
• Markers

Materials Needed:
• Pencils

Vocabulary:
1. Moat: a deep trench usually filled with water that surrounds the castle.
2. Arrow loop: A narrow vertical slit cut into a wall through which arrows could be fired from inside.
3. Portcullis: vertical sliding wooden grille shod with iron suspended in front of a gateway designed to protect the gate.
4. Ashlar: blocks of smooth, squared stone of any kind.

Motivation:
1. Show and discuss examples of castles containing traditional appearances.
2. Demonstrate all steps of folding and cutting procedure before students begin. 3. Show students the finished project.

Instruction:
1. Take one castle pattern and begin carefully cutting along only the solid lines. Once each piece has been cut out (three separate pieces in total) begin folding along all of the dotted lines. Try using the edge of the table for straight lines.

Follow directions along the bottom of the castle indicating which piece (bottom A) to fold in first. Tuck in Bottom B1 second folding in the lower flap into Bottom A. Repeat the fold with Bottom B2 tucking in the bottom flap into Bottom A. Finish tucking in the last piece, Bottom C, closing the pieces to form a box shape. The last flap should tuck into Bottom A allowing all flaps to fold inside the bottom of the box. The outside bottom should appear folded with only the Bottom A words able to be seen.

Apply Glue to the flap along the side of the wall that will attach the two open sides together ensuring also the flaps will stay in place (no glue is needed for the bottom flaps themselves). Tuck in the folded two halves that remain on the top of the castle to complete the roof.

Take the two remaining pieces and turn the blank ends of the paper around towards the dotted lines until a long cylinder is formed with the cut out squares along the top edge. Staple the cylinders along the dotted line and again attaching the towers (cylinders) to the castle sides when the folded edge is against the castle.

Take a blue sheet of construction paper and use a pencil to draw out a stream of water. Cut out the stream and glue it to the green piece of construction paper that will represent the grass.

Look over the different examples of castle details such as the windows, ivory, doors, and bricks. Decorate the castle using some or all of the detail examples as well as creating some unique detail from your imagination.

7.
Glue the decorated castle onto the grass so the castle is facing the stream. Try adding details to the water (such as fish), grass (fallen weapons) or even to the castle (such as a bridge).







Evaluation:

1. Use line and color to create a design for the castle?
2. Use correct techniques to produce clean borders and crisp-edged lines?
3. Evaluate completed work?
