Objectives:
1. Identify Greek and Roman mosaics. 2. Use color to create a pattern. 3. Recognize pattern in mosaics of Greek and Roman and students. 4. Evaluate the use of color and pattern in Greek and Roman mosaics and student work.
Vocabulary:
1. Mosaic: creating images with small pieces of colored glass, stone or other material.
Motivation:
1. Show and discuss examples of prints of mosaics. 2. Demonstrate all steps of procedure before students begin. 3. Show students the finished example pointing out the use of color in a pattern. 4. Explore ideas of color theory.
Instruction: 1. Choose one sheet of the mosaic pattern worksheets.
2. Use the colored mosaic tiles to create a colorful pattern. Place the tiles on the patterned paper cutting the tiles in half if necessary. Be sure to lay out the entire design before gluing any pieces to the paper.
3. Leaving the unglued design in place, pick up the tiles one by one and apply glue to the back side of the tile.
4. Continue gluing each piece until the mosaic is complete.
Evaluation:
1. Use color to create a design in the mosaic? 2. Use correct cutting and gluing techniques to produce clean borders and lines? 3. Evaluate completed work?
