Objectives:
1. Recognize and describe the style of Claes Oldenburg
2. Create an additive soft sculpture
3. Indentify the media, tools, techniques, and processes used in sculpture
Materials Provided:
• Large White paper that is folded in half
• Patterns of animals and objects to trace
• Staplers and staples
• Markers
• String
• Handout on Oldenburg
Motivation:
1. Show and discuss examples of prints from Claes Oldenburg.
2. Point out that Oldenburg’s work uses every day objects but makes them larger than life.
3. Pass out the handout and go over it with the group.
4. Explain to the group that they will be making soft sculptures similar to what Oldenburg created.
Instruction: 1. Pull out the patterns and show the group what they are so that they can decide what they want to make. Explain that there is a limited number of patterns and, that they should share or pass them to someone else when they are finished.
2. Pass out the white paper that is folded in half. Tell students that they need to make sure that the paper remains folded when they trace their pattern. Pass out the patterns and have them begin to trace it onto their paper.
3. Once the patterns are traced onto the paper have them draw the details inside the shape to finish the drawing.
4. Cut the shape out of the paper making sure that the students cut both sheets of paper that is folded in half. When they are finished they should have two sheets of paper that are the same shape.
5. Start stapling around the outside edge of the shape (approximately ½“from the sides). Staple around the whole shape except for one end. Leave an opening that is large enough to push crumbled newspaper into without tearing.
6. Once the sculpture is stapled, have the students start to color it with markers or crayons if you have them. They should color and design both sides because it will be seen from all angles. If you are running short on time, color only one side.
7. Pick up one single page of newspaper and crumble it up very loosely and begin to stuff the sculpture. Tell students to be gentle and to only use one sheet at a time so that they don’t rip their sculpture.
8. When they are done stuffing their sculpture staple the open end and any other places that they may have ripped while stuffing.
9. Finish the project by stapling a string on to the top of the sculpture so that it can hang and be displayed.
