Becoming a Botanist

Identify wildflowers by their parts. Use field guides to identify common local wildflowers. Learn characteristics used in botanical classification.
Becoming a Naturalist

  Use field guides to identify common living organisms in the natural world of Appalachia. Students enjoy the hands-on and team approach to this project and gain a broad knowledge of the local ecosystems.
Regional Environmental Action Program (R.E.A.P.)

  Two or more days of hands-on learning that focuses on ecology. Lessons include taxonomy, comparative analysis of plant communities, stream biodiversity and animal adaptations. All activities take place in a camp-style setting and promote Earth stewardship. Call for pricing.

  Inquiry-based ecosystem assessment program that determines the ecological health of forest and stream communities. Highlights include: satellite and aerial photography, chemical and biological health of a stream, point-quarter survey of a forest, and bird population analysis. $20 per student. Herpetology 101

Interact with live amphibians and reptiles from the region to discover how adaptations help species succeed in nature. Explore life cycles, identifying characteristics, habitats and behaviors.
Investigate an Ecosystem

Work with the Schrader Center educators to customize a program that uses the scientific method and advanced equipment to sample one ecosystem in-depth or sample two ecosystems for comparison studies.

Try some “down home” dancing. Learn basic clogging steps and a short routine set to Appalachian music.

Explore the rich history and social context of dance in Middle Eastern culture through authentic costumes and a dance performance.

Magic of the Wheel and Beyond

Learn clay techniques of wheel throwing and hand building to create an original piece of art. Utilize balance, shape/form and texture. Discuss functional and non-functional objects as art forms. 24 student limit.
Ceramic Animal Sculptures
6-8
Utilize ceramic forming techniques such as pinch, score and slip and clay balloon. Demonstrate craftsmanship and originality to transfer a two-dimensional drawing into a 3D sculpture of an animal in its environment.
Face Vase
6-8
Using self-hardening clay and hand-building methods, create a Picasso inspired vase. You will add expressionistic faces to each side, making yours unique.
Expressive Designs in Wire
6-8
Analyze the work of Alexander Calder and consider how he used the elements and principles of design such as line, shape, form, emphasis, balance and repetition. Create a wire sculpture and identify similarities between your work and Calder’s sculptures.
The Art Experience

Field trip to the Stifel Center. Students will be split into two groups; creating projects from clay, drawing and painting.
